![]() On a purely structural level I now see an amazing synchronization of how knowledge is being digested and then structured and re-packaged at all levels of society. On the surface much of this comes across like a democratization of knowledge, an assimilation of differences in the access to knowledge. Libraries of books are converted into digital libraries, and this physical change still under way for this main knowledge "containers" means changes that go far beyond issues of "tools." It seems that what is possible technologically within any given time frame brings major changes in how we are going about conducting research. ![]() The result-well, I am not too sure if it is the result or the method-is that technological tools are most essential for the formation of how a new generation of students and researchers (and everybody else with Internet access) is gathering knowledge, reading and interpreting information, evaluating information, structuring sources, reproducing and disseminating knowledge. It is becoming a very essential issue for the social sciences as well, for cultural studies, East Asian Studies-basically for all disciplines. But lately KM is not anymore limited to disciplines such as business administration. Knowledge Management (KM) exists as an academic discipline since 1991, includes certain areas of business administration, information systems, and also library and information sciences. and see what seems really useful and what does possibly just sound 'cool' finally, let's see what knowledge management (KM) programs can do to gather texts, images, and information in general, and how they can serve to share and disseminate our research. show search results in an informative way (ideally showing the text around search terms, allowing one-click accesses to the publication/s and the correct page or pages in the publication/s that were found) search for text (in both English and East Asian languages) within all files simultaneously, quickly and easily, either within all PDFs and other files on your computer or limited to a certain project folder and its sub-folders find files/publications on your computer quickly an easily Goals (I will concentrate on PDFs in this posting): you have hundreds or thousands of mostly PDF files (and maybe fewer MS Word and image files), in various languages (English, Korean, etc.) and stored in various folders on your computer's hard drive, with no fast and easy access to the file or files you are looking for, because they are hard to get into a sensible order

The player tends to spring through areas quickly, so this doesn’t become a problem unless they slow to a stop, such as during scenes that restrict movement and cannot be skipped. The individual textures do their job, but they’re not awe-inspiring. ![]() When looking at scenery closer up, it doesn’t look quite as pretty. In long platforming sections, or difficult areas where the player could fall several times before succeeding, it would have felt like less of a lonely experience had there been more dialogue. The game took over two years to develop, and it is disappointing that, given the game’s title, Gone North Games did not dedicate more of this time to creating the feeling of a bedtime story.Īs a whole, the story of ASAMU is a nice idea, but it feels like beta material and could have done with more back and forth between the characters. There is no conversation between the Father and his daughter outside of the few scripted story events and a handful of optional story objects that can be found to activate new pieces of dialogue. While traversing the obstacles laid in front of you, the dialogue is surprisingly sparse for a game called ‘A Story About My Uncle’. The fantastic adventure he describes quickly unfolds into a solid platforming game where the player must travel from checkpoint to checkpoint in order to further the plot. In ASAMU the player must leap and swing through a series of areas, guided by the voice of a father who narrates the tale to his daughter in the form of a bedtime story. A Story About My Uncle is a PC platformer developed by Gone North Games. ![]() What diversifies Australian Boomerangs from other resembling shaped 'throwing sticks' from around the world is the returning of the Australian boomerang. This is why, even if you shoot it spinning through the air, it takes some skill to get that boomerang to land softly in your hands and not over the hedge in your neighbor's yard. ![]() The circles could be really large or authentically tight, depending on how swift the boomerang is traveling and at what angle. This unbalancing of forces called 'torque' cause the boomerang to cock and follow a twisted path. And that means it is going briskly and generates further lift than the nethermost sect, which is rotating on the contrary direction of the forward movement. When one sect reaches the top of the spin, it is both moving forward and rotating forward. So one sect will be at the top of each spin, and the other will be at the bottom. You flutter your wrist, so it spins through the air like a propeller. Boomerangs only work when they are thrown at an angle with your arm around 20º down from the top of your head. Since every action has an equal and contrary response, this lowered force of air off the wing pushes that sect in the contrary direction, generating lift.Īnd the briskly an airfoil moves through the air, the further lift it gets. When airstrikes an airfoil, goes over the commanding edge and pushes down off the trailing edge, creating a lowered force of the air. And the bottom of the sect is flat, while the top is scratched. When associated with the exact shape of the boomerang, the amalgamation of those two types of speeds makes it turn in a circle as it flies.īoomerangs have two wings that connect at an angle, and they are each shaped like an airplane's body and what is known as an 'airfoil.' They have a rounder, blunter edge, called a commanding edge and a sharp tapered edge called a trailing edge. A rotating speed ensures the boomerang's return to the thrower and a forward speed that pushes the boomerang to a certain point. It works because you are shooting the boomerang spinning off at an angle, but you are also launching it on, so it ends up with two speeds. They just fly really accurately.Īnd indeed, the boomerangs that are aimed to come back to you are genuinely difficult to use, but if you do it right, you can use aerodynamics to get a boomerang to land neatly in your hands. There are also distinct kinds of boomerangs, and numerous of them, like the bones used for hunting, are not meant to return. The ancient Polish used them for hunting animals, King Tut held a collection of them, and of course, they are Australian icons. Humans have been operating boomerangs for at least ages. Read more about it in this comparison post I wrote on drywall, plywood, MDF and OSB Insulating Compounds It is made from large, cross oriented wooden strips and is generally considered a stronger material than your standard plywood. #6 Oriented Strand Board(OSB)Ī comparable material to drywall in terms of mass and soundproofing benefits, OSB, is a pretty great product. You may just find out you don’t need to invest a 1000$ extra. One quick suggestion here- try out sealing the cracks and leaks around the window sill first and see if the amount of noise reduction you get is worth it. Yes, I am talking about adding a layer of soundproof glass on your window. The REAL solution, though, will be expensive, and will put you back by about 1000$. This will only cost you about 20$ and 30 minutes of your time. For instance, you could go around the edges, and seal any cracks with caulk/acoustic tape. If the majority of the unwanted sounds are coming in through your window, it makes sense to actually devote your efforts into soundproofing it first. Makes them eco-friendly too as they don’t require as much of the VOC laden glues and resins. Floating floors are useful because they are placed together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and aren’t hard-glued together like your standard flooring. This is basically a new layer of flooring that goes on top of the underlayment(see point #5). In fact, this is another really popular use for MLV #4 Floating floor That’s another way of saying add mass to the floor. This is why, most soundproofing contractors you speak to will recommend reinforcing your flooring with underlayment. If the flooring on the upper floor isn’t properly reinforced, there is a very big chance you’ll be hearing every footstep, down on the ground floor. If you live in a house with multiple floors, you really don’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night when someone needs to use the upstairs bathroom. Sounds like a lot of options, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, I’ll cover all of them in this post #3 Floor Underlayment Adding a damping compound in between the drywall layers. There are a couple more sophisticated techniques you could apply, such as: Adding another layer on top of that is simple to do and provides some real soundproofing benefits.Īnd it doesn’t just have to be a brute force tactic of installing another layer of wall on top of another, and hoping that their combined mass brings a reduction in noise transmission. Most US homes already have a layer of drywall. More flexibility means that it performs even better at stopping sound vibrations #2 Drywallĭrywall or as it’s known in the US through a popular brand name- Sheetrock- is again, one of the top materials for soundproofing. Go on, I’ll wait here!Īnother great thing about MLV is that it is supple. ![]() The ¼” category has a standalone STC rating of 32 and the ⅛” has a STC rating of 26.ĭon’t know what STC means? Read this article first. To give you an idea- MLV usually comes in two types- ¼” and ⅛”. ![]() This is a huge thing because a big issue with soundproofing a wall, say, is that as you add mass- an extra layer of drywall, or some insulation, you’ll have to give up a bit of floor space around the walls. I’d say it has to do with the fact that it is extremely dense and at the same time, is very thin, and doesn’t add to the wall thickness by much. ![]() MLV is one product that is heavily used for soundproofing, and it’s probably the most popular also. To this end, here are a couple of materials that are great barriers for sound: #1 Mass Loaded Vinyl(MLV) In fact, when it comes down to seriously soundproofing a room, adding mass to the walls, doors, windows, etc becomes a must. Adding mass is one of the most important things when it comes to soundproofing, as it can block sound vibrations very effectively. ![]()

But it’s a bad strategy for scientific progress. And since ambulance-chasers cite each other’s papers, they can each rack up hundreds of citations quickly. Most of those papers pass peer review and get published because they are not technically wrong. This behaviour is so common they even have a name for it: “ambulance-chasing”, after the anecdotal strategy of lawyers to follow ambulances in the hope of finding new clients.Īmbulance-chasing is a good strategy to further one’s career in particle physics. Each time an anomaly is reported, particle physicists will quickly write hundreds of papers about how new particles allegedly explain the observation. In some cases, the new particles’ task is to make a theory more aesthetically appealing, but in many cases their purpose is to fit statistical anomalies. The modern new particles don’t solve any problems. The antiparticles that Paul Dirac predicted were likewise necessary to solve a problem, and so were the neutrinos that were predicted by Wolfgang Pauli. The Higgs boson, on the other hand, was required to solve a problem. For example, the currently accepted theory of elementary particles – the Standard Model – doesn’t require new particles it works just fine the way it is. In the past, predictions for new particles were correct only when adding them solved a problem with the existing theories. Particle physicists seem to have misconstrued this to mean that any falsifiable idea is also good science. Partly the problem is social: most people who work in the field (I used to be one of them) genuinely believe that inventing particles is good procedure because it’s what they have learned, and what all their colleagues are doing.īut I believe the biggest contributor to this trend is a misunderstanding of Karl Popper’s philosophy of science, which, to make a long story short, demands that a good scientific idea has to be falsifiable. There are many factors that have contributed to this sad decline of particle physics. This leaves people like me, who have left the field – I now work in astrophysics – as the only ones able and willing to criticise the situation. And so the experimentalists keep their mouths shut, too. At the same time, they profit from it, because all those hypothetical particles are used in grant proposals to justify experiments. But is this a good strategy?Įxperimental particle physicists know of the problem, and try to distance themselves from what their colleagues in theory development do. An army of typewriting monkeys may also sometimes produce a useful sentence. They justify their work by claiming that it is good practice, or that every once in a while one of them accidentally comes up with an idea that is useful for something else. Talk to particle physicists in private, and many of them will admit they do not actually believe those particles exist. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) hasn’t seen any of those particles either, even though, before its launch, many theoretical physicists were confident it would see at least a few. However, we do not know that dark matter is indeed made of particles and even if it is, to explain astrophysical observations one does not need to know details of the particles’ behaviour. We even had a (luckily short-lived) fad of “unparticles”.Īll experiments looking for those particles have come back empty-handed, in particular those that have looked for particles that make up dark matter, a type of matter that supposedly fills the universe and makes itself noticeable by its gravitational pull. Since the 1980s, physicists have invented an entire particle zoo, whose inhabitants carry names like preons, sfermions, dyons, magnetic monopoles, simps, wimps, wimpzillas, axions, flaxions, erebons, accelerons, cornucopions, giant magnons, maximons, macros, wisps, fips, branons, skyrmions, chameleons, cuscutons, planckons and sterile neutrinos, to mention just a few. Many of these tests have actually been done, and more are being commissioned as we speak. It has become common among physicists to invent new particles for which there is no evidence, publish papers about them, write more papers about these particles’ properties, and demand the hypothesis be experimentally tested. But almost every particle physics conference has sessions just like this, except they do it with more maths. ![]() Kudos to zoologists, I’ve never heard of such a conference.
